Upgrading Cornish Units For VIVO With BMI Redland Renown Tiles

WC Roofing Ltd recently completed a significant commercial re-roofing project at RNAS Culdrose in Helston, Cornwall. This major contract involved re-roofing multiple Cornish Units for VIVO as part of a wider refurbishment programme at the Royal Navy's important air station.

The Project Brief

VIVO, the infrastructure support services provider for the Ministry of Defence, commissioned this major refurbishment programme to upgrade the thermal performance of existing Cornish Units at RNAS Culdrose alongside general building improvements.

The primary aims were upgrading thermal performance to improve energy efficiency and reduce heating costs, general refurbishment to address wear and tear on existing roofs, compliance with BMI Redland specifications to achieve performance standards and maintain warranties, and minimal disruption as RNAS Culdrose is an operational military base.

Why Redland Renown Tiles?

For this project, we installed BMI Redland Renown tiles across all the Cornish Units. Redland is one of the UK's most trusted roofing brands, with a heritage spanning over 100 years.

The Renown is a traditional interlocking concrete tile that has been a popular choice for both domestic and commercial roofing projects for decades. Its proven performance and reliability made it the ideal choice for this military installation project.

Redland Renown tiles are manufactured to exacting standards, providing excellent durability and a long service life. Cornwall's coastal location means buildings face challenging weather conditions, including strong winds, heavy rainfall and salt-laden air. Redland Renown tiles provide excellent weather resistance, with their interlocking design creating a secure, weatherproof covering.

Working To BMI Redland Specification

One of the critical aspects of this project was achieving full compliance with BMI Redland specifications. As experienced roofing contractors, WC Roofing Ltd understands the importance of following manufacturer guidelines precisely.

The BMI Redland specification covered numerous aspects including roof pitch requirements, underlayment and breathable membranes, battening specifications, tile fixing patterns, verge, ridge and hip details, and ventilation requirements.

The Re-Roofing Process

We carefully removed the old roofing materials, taking care to protect the building structure. Any necessary repairs to roof timbers or other structural elements were identified and carried out.

To achieve the thermal performance improvements required, we upgraded the roof construction with new insulation materials. Modern breathable membranes were installed to provide secondary weather protection whilst allowing any moisture within the roof structure to escape.

New roof battens were installed, with all fixings meeting the specification requirements. Counter-battens were installed where required to create ventilation pathways.

Our roofing team then installed the Redland Renown tiles, working methodically across each roof area. Every tile was positioned correctly, with proper overlap and alignment maintained throughout.

All ridge and hip details were completed using genuine Redland accessories, with mechanical fixings used throughout. Verges were finished neatly with appropriate edge tiles and ventilation systems.

Project Outcomes

The completed re-roofing project has delivered significant benefits for RNAS Culdrose. The upgraded roofs now provide substantially better insulation, reducing heat loss and lowering energy consumption.

Working at a military base required additional security procedures, and our team complied fully with all RNAS Culdrose requirements.

The new Redland Renown tiles provide excellent weather protection that will last for many decades. Modern roofing materials and proper installation techniques mean these roofs will require minimal maintenance.
